An Insight Into the Facility
Costing around £253 million, HMP Five Wells is designed with a focus on resettlement and rehabilitation. The prison is outfitted with innovative technology and offers a broad range of amenities and workshops to help prisoners—referred to as "residents"—gain useful skills. Workshops include fields such as engineering, catering, and carpentry.
Security and Inmate Comfort
While Five Wells has a relaxed atmosphere and lacks bars on windows, the prison maintains stringent security protocols, including extensive camera coverage. Each block is meticulously designed to encourage positive interactions among residents.
Rehabilitation and Community Involvement
The facility offers 24 different workshops to provide residents with hands-on skills, furthering their chances for a meaningful life post-release. Many local businesses have already shown interest in helping inmates with their "rehabilitative journey," according to Sarah Guy, the prison's head of activities.
A Different Approach
Governor John McLaughlin and Justice Secretary Dominic Raab emphasize that despite its modern amenities—including a gym and educational tablets—the prison is not a "soft-touch" facility. The aim is to provide a more humane environment that still maintains the security required in a prison setting.
Future Growth
Five Wells is the first institution to be completed as part of the government's initiative to add 20,000 new prison spaces by the mid-2020s. The prison is expected to reach full capacity by the end of the year, gradually incorporating residents from the general population.
