Stocken Prison originally began as a young offender institution in 1985, initially holding 320 inmates. Since then, a series of expansions in 1990, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2011, among other years, has substantially increased its capacity to as high as 1,071. The facility now provides various workshops, including painting, decorating, and laundry services, as part of its commitment to offering purposeful activities for all prisoners.
Though largely secure, it's worth noting that Stocken Prison did experience a significant riot event in June 2015, leading to substantial damage. However, the institution continues to operate under stringent security measures.
