A Brief History of Stafford Prison
The original Stafford Prison was constructed under the Stafford Gaol Act of 1787 and officially opened its doors in 1793 as Staffordshire County Gaol. The prison underwent significant expansions throughout the 19th century.
Among its historical anecdotes is the unfortunate story of forger William Booth, who was publicly executed outside the jail in 1812. Due to a poorly tied rope, he survived his first hanging only to be executed successfully later the same day. Another notable inmate was George Smith, who was imprisoned several times for theft and later became a hangman, even conducting some executions at Stafford Prison.
Stafford Prison transitioned to an institution exclusively for sex offenders in 2014, focusing on the unique rehabilitation needs of this inmate population.
